The most recommended thing is that you use this type of irrigation in plants that are not as delicate as succulents, cacti or mother-in-law’s tongue because, in addition, watering them from above helps them to have complete hydration.

Some tips for this type of irrigation are not to leave the leaves wet as this can cause mould or burn them if they are in the sun. It is also essential that you use the right amount of water because if it is tiny, it will not reach the roots, and on the contrary, if you use a lot of water, the plant can rot.

How to do it?

Approach the plant, and with a multi-hole watering can, pour the water from about 20 centimetres above your plant and try to cover all the leaves. The water may spill, but don’t worry; it’s okay if it falls on the ground.

Watering from below may be a little inconvenient – it will take you a little longer, perhaps, than the traditional way – but it will give you some attractive advantages. Among other things, you will ensure that the plants only absorb the water they need, avoiding excesses, and all without splashing.

Do not think that you will only end up with your plant in the garbage because of the watering if you make a mistake in its frequency or waterlogging in some cases -such as African violets, cyclamens, and peace lilies.

It will suffice to wet the leaves, stem or other tissues during the process so that -if they do not dry quickly and under certain conditions- they end up increasing fungi. In a short time, the fungi will generate rot that, if they reach the roots or the neck of the plant, will kill it. Take care of your health and water better from below! It will be an excellent preventive measure.

Others, in addition to fungi, are also sensitive to limescale in the water – for example, acidophilic ones. In these cases, irrigation with soft or distilled water is convenient. The one on the faucet might give you some trouble.

How to water from below

Moisturizing them in this way is very simple. It would help if you had a deep plate to hold the water, which also fits part of the submerged pot. Who says plate, says any other container worth that purpose? The important thing is that the earth has it easy to absorb water like a sponge.

Do you have delicate plants?

 Avoid problems and water them. Give your plant some time off. About a quarter of an hour should be enough for the substrate to soak. Check it by feeling it with your finger and, if necessary, wait a few more minutes before removing it.

If you prefer, you can leave the water supply permanently, but it is advisable to make some changes. It should not be in direct contact with the pot, soil or plant roots – otherwise, they will rot. You will achieve this by placing a bed of gravel, stones or other material to support the pot’s base. In this way, the water will remain at your disposal, but without risk.

Use self-watering pots

The self-watering pots will supply water only as the plant needs it, without the risk of fungi or diseases. You only have to worry about checking the accumulated liquid and refilling it when its level drops.

As you can see, it is an exciting way to hydrate your plants, especially if they require frequent watering and you intend to free yourself from such a need. I use it with a peace lily and a photonic -which I have inside the house- and a gardenia that I placed on my terrace.

emergency irrigation

Have you forgotten to water your plants? When, due to carelessness or other reasons, the plant has suffered from water stress (a pressing lack of water), leaving the substrate caked and unable to assimilate it, it will be advisable to adopt extraordinary measures. In such a situation, irrigation by immersion, introducing the pot or the bare root ball -almost entirely- in a basin of water will be the only thing capable of recovering it.

You should leave the specimen for about fifteen minutes or until the air stops coming out. The absence of bubbles will indicate that the earth has already assimilated all the water it is capable of.

This technique is also suitable for certain crops such as orchids or bonsai with little “earth bread”; this technique is also correct. It will be a great way to ensure hydration, although it should not be abused either – you will have to alternate with the shower.
