16 How to Geranium Plant, Grow, and Care & Flower for Pelargoniums 2022

Geranium is one of the quintessential summer plants and the absolute protagonist of terraces or balconies at this time. If we want these plants to look healthy and beautiful in the summer months, we must pay special attention

to caring for their growth. In this way, we will obtain that characteristic flowering, whatever the colour, reigning over the intense green leaves.

If we want to enjoy the emergence of beautiful nature that is breathed when seeing a Geranium in bloom, we must help the plant flourish correctly. Something simple if we know-how, but it is necessary to consider that flowering is significant wear and tear on the plant, which we will have to alleviate if we want to enjoy it until the last blows of summer.

The good news is that the Geranium is a grateful plant and very undemanding in its care. It means that it will demand little attention throughout the year, including the summer months. And there are few things as summery as gazing at geraniums in bloom, so they are well worth treating them with a bit of pampering!

Where to buy geraniums?

Geranium is one of the most popular plants in Spain. It resists drought and heat very well, and in addition, its flowers are responsible for decorating and brightening the gardens and balconies of half the country. In addition to being cultivated for their great beauty, geraniums have a unique aroma. They are easy to maintain ( suitable for beginners in plant care), and it supports almost all pests and diseases very well.

With more than 240 varieties, the Pelargonium (in its scientific sense), in temperate climates, can bloom all year round. If we want them to thrive, we must take extreme care in their growth stage. In this way, we can make our entire exterior shine thanks to the beautiful geranium flowers. And it is that it is recommended that the geraniums are outdoors. According to Feng Shui, it is better to avoid these plants indoors. If you want to know everything about geraniums, stay tuned!

16 How to Geranium Plant, Grow, and Care & Flower for Pelargoniums 2022

1 GERANIUM CARE

Geranium is a trendy plant that will offer a beautiful flowering during the summer with a few simple care. It is what you should keep in mind:

2 HOW MUCH LIGHT DO GERANIUMS NEED?

Geranium is a plant that needs a lot of light. Ideally, it should receive several hours of direct sunlight a day, improving its flowering. Of course, you should avoid receiving this direct sun during the hottest hours of the day. In this way, the idea is to place them in full sun or semi-shaded areas.

3 HOW SHOULD GERANIUMS BE WATERED?

Taking care of the light is essential, but also watering the geraniums. The most important thing is not to abuse the use of water, as it is an enemy of your well-being. The trick to knowing how much water our geraniums need is always to be aware that the substrate is slightly damp. It is essential to avoid saturating the plant with water and, after watering, remove the remaining water from the dish, as it could cause its roots to rot.

4 WHAT IS THE BEST COMPOST FOR GERANIUMS?

The most common is that the geraniums are in pots of about 30-40 centimetres in diameter. In this case, it is recommended that we pay them in the spring-summer season. Also, there will come a time when there will be no need to transplant them since geraniums are relatively small plants.

Regarding the fertilizer, we can choose between a solid and a liquid for this type of plant. The ideal is to start applying it at the beginning of spring, although it can also be done throughout the summer, with a frequency of once a month; these are some of the types of fertilizers recommended for geraniums:

  • Organic fertilizers. Anyone can work for geraniums: compost, hummus, green manure, guano, manure. Just add a handful per plant and mix it with a little more soil.
  • Fertilizers (chemical fertilizers). They are used to make geraniums flourish. It is recommended to use one for each plant and that it is, above all, specific for geraniums. It is essential always to read the label of each fertilizer well to know how many doses to apply.

5 HOW AND WHEN TO PRUNE GERANIUMS?

The pruning of geraniums is usually in autumn, although in summer, to help the subsequent flowering, we should gradually remove the dry leaves and withered flowers. In autumn, we can do the general pruning, although it will always depend on geranium growth. We recommend cutting the thinner and weaker branches directly from the base. We should only leave the most vigorous side shoots. About five days after pruning, the new additions and the flowers will come out.

6 WHAT TO DO TO MAKE GERANIUMS BLOOM?

Geraniums can live up to 40 years or more if we care for them properly. For geraniums to flourish correctly, they need many hours of light. Therefore, if you have a very bright balcony, take the opportunity to plant your geraniums in that corner. Of course, try that they receive some shade during the afternoon to avoid overexposure and that they finally spoil. The ideal temperature for this type of plant is between 18 and 20 ºC.

7 WHY ARE THERE GERANIUMS THAT DO NOT BLOOM?

If the geraniums fail to flower, the most likely cause is a lack of sunlight, too much fertilizer, or frigid temperatures. Also, because of pests, geraniums may not bloom. If the plant is infected, the best thing to do is to spray the geraniums with a fertilizer solution diluted in water at least once a week.

8 MOST COMMON PESTS AND DISEASES OF GERANIUM

Some pests can affect geraniums quite a bit:

  • African butterfly (also bore geraniums) We usually find these insects in warmer times, with an average temperature of about 20º. The main problem with this butterfly is that its invasion is silent. Indeed, it does not cause direct damage, but caterpillars can appear and affect the stems if it lays their eggs. In this case, the first thing to do is remove the damaged and invaded parts of the geranium and apply a specific insecticide. A trick: to prevent the appearance of these pests is to use preventive insecticides to take care of the geraniums.
  • Geranium whitefly: These insects damage the leaves with their bites (evident due to the intense greenness of the geranium leaves). Another way to detect this pest is if the undersides of the leaves have cottony white spots, which are the larvae of the whitefly. They can be removed by hand or by applying an insecticide. Neem oil will help you.
  • Red spider: this pest feeds on the sap of the geranium leaves, producing small yellow spots, causing the leaf to curl and dry out. To avoid this pest, it is best to apply an insecticide during the colder months.

But the geranium can not only be attacked by insect pests; several diseases can affect its growth and subsequent flowering:

  • Geranium rust: This disease causes yellow spots to appear on the leaves, similar to pimples. These, after 15 days, burst, releasing a series of spores that end up killing the plant. To prevent this, use a fungicide and get rid of the plant before the pustules open to prevent it from affecting other geranium plants.
  • Leaf spots: with this disease, you will see that, on the oldest leaves of your geranium, some wet spots appear in the form of a blister that is spreading through the leaves. To fix it, remove the infected leaves and apply a chemical treatment with fungicides.
  • Gray rot ( botrytis): this fungus appears in conditions of excessive humidity. You will notice it if the fabrics with grey and bluish spots begin to soften. To treat it, apply a fungicide.

9 ARE GERANIUMS TOXIC TO PETS?

Geraniums include slightly toxic compounds to pets, especially dogs and cats. When ingested, this plant can cause neurological signs such as weakness, incoordination when walking, tremors and pupillary dilation; if you have a pet at home, be very careful and keep geraniums away from them. These are the plants you should and should not have in a house with pets.

10 TYPES OF GERANIUMS

There is a wide variety of geraniums, although it is true that four main types are differentiated:

  • Common geranium ( Pelargonium hortorum )
  • Gipsy geranium (hybrids of Pelargonium peltatum, hanging habit, ideal for tall planters) or also known as ivy geranium.
  • Pansy geranium ( Pelargonium domesticum “regal” hybrids best for indoor use)
  • Lemon geranium ( Pelargonium capitatum, Pelargonium graveolens or Pelargonium Crispum ) with aromatic leaves reminiscent of lemon, very split and curly, and with the appearance of a shrub.

11 LEMON GERANIUMS, THE GERANIUM THAT REPELS MOSQUITOES

With the arrival of heat, mosquitoes begin to emerge. In addition to lavender and citronella, a plant drives away these insects: geranium. Specifically, the geranium that repels mosquitoes is Pelargonium graveolens, characterized by its intense lemon smell. It is due to specific content in citronellol (one of the main ingredients in citronella oil).

12 HOW TO DECORATE WITH GERANIUMS

Geraniums are the undisputed kings of balconies. Mix it in flower beds and long flower pots with other queens of summer, such as asters, carnations or daisies. You can also hang your geraniums on the wall. Of course, if you opt for this alternative, it is essential that the drainage holes are not at the base but slightly above. It will create a reserve of water in the pot, and that we should not water the geraniums daily.

If we are going to decorate the house’s interior with geraniums, we can place them near the windows. They provide colour, freshness and a lot of life. Above all, we like how geraniums look in the kitchen, dining room or living room. To give it an original touch, look for some fun flower pots, or you can even decorate them yourself at home with chalk paint or chalk paint. Take a look at these photos of geraniums and get inspired to decorate your home with the most beautiful and cheerful flowers. Are you going to miss it?
