BEGONIA REX CARE
If this plant has stolen your heart, I don’t blame you; it has done the same to me. Now my goal is to give you all the keys to take care of your Begonia Rex and not break your heart by withering.
How to care rex begonia Wild Roots Indoors Gardening 2023
LIGHTNING
The Begonia Rex needs a lot of indirect light to maintain the spectacular appearance of its leaves. If it does not receive the lighting it needs, you will notice it immediately because its leaves will become duller and weaker.
You must place it in a place where it receives lighting… Not direct sun! The sun’s rays could burn the leaves and damage the plant.
For this reason, placing your Begonia near a window with the light filtered with a tent or curtain is best. Also, remember that the sun is less potent in winter. However, in summer, 30 minutes may be enough to provide a burn on the leaves. My advice is to change the location depending on the year’s season and the sun’s intensity.
TEMPERATURE
We could say that this plant is more of cool temperatures. It will develop in perfect conditions in a range of around 20 degrees.
What makes it a little worse is the excessive heat that can curl its leaves if we don’t provide it with the moisture and hydration it needs (which is a lot).
It does not tolerate excessive cold either, and it is advisable to avoid subjecting it to temperatures below 15 degrees because we could completely stop the plant’s growth and even end up losing it.
IRRIGATION
Now she comes to “where they kill her.” Of the care of the Begonia Rex, I would say that this is the one we must pay the most attention to. The Begonia needs abundant watering and must always have moist soil or substrate. Be careful here that wet does not mean waterlogged.
This plant has fine and delicate roots, and an excess of water (and more in winter) could cause the appearance of fungi or root rot, so it is essential to water without flooding.
And how is this done? Well, watering abundantly and spaced out.
When you water your Begonia Rex, do so until enough water comes out of the drainage hole. In no case, leave water in the bottom of the pot and do not water again until the soil begins to dry.
In addition, I recommend using pots with good drainage (essential). And if you are going to repot or transplant them, I advise you to buy perlite (sold at any garden center) and mix it with the soil or substrate you will use. This mixture of substrate plus perlite will make the soil drain water better and the roots more aerated.
HUMIDITY
This care is essential. The Begonia Rex needs high environmental humidity since it perspires a lot through the leaves. Providing moisture is necessary to keep the plant hydrated.
Otherwise, what will happen is that the leaves will become limp, curl, and curl downwards. Your city (as in mine) you have a dry climate, do not worry because that does not mean that you cannot take care of a Begonia Rex. Of course, you can; what happens is that you will have to provide the ambient humidity manually.
How? Well, you have two options: spray the leaves with water daily or place it near a humidifier that generates moisture.
PASSES
This plant needs fertilizer because it “eats” a lot of nutrients from the soil. We will have to recharge the “vitamins” substrate using fertilizers or liquid fertilizers.
You can use either of these two, although you already know that my favorites are the fertilizers buried in the ground (nail or stick type) because they are less aggressive, and the plant absorbs them more naturally.
The times to fertilize the Begonia Rex are from spring to autumn. You will find the subscriber frequency indicated on the product packaging.
Last tip! If you opt for liquid fertilizer, remember always to use less quantity than indicated by the manufacturer.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Are red begonias perennial?
These plants have white, red, or pink flowers in green or red-leafed varieties. They are grown as garden plants in spring, similar to marigolds, impatiens, and petunias. Although they are perennial in warmer weather, most gardeners treat them as annuals.
Can a begonia be a houseplant?
In general, fibrous and rhizomatous begonias make excellent houseplants. In contrast, tuberous begonias can be grown as houseplants but have a more challenging time surviving due to the need for higher moisture and light than the other two types. Indoor begonia care begins with the proper location.
How often should I water begonias?
Every two to four days, Begonias thrive in neither dry nor saturated soil. Your goal is to find a moisture level and watering schedule that are just right. A good rule of thumb is to water every two to four days. When it’s hot and dry, you’ll need to water more often than when the air gets more relaxed, and the soil holds more moisture.
Are begonias indoor or outdoor plants?
Begonias are popular as annual garden plants outdoors and as houseplants indoors. There are about 1,500 species of begonias native to tropical regions worldwide, including Central and South America, Asia, and Africa.
How long do potted begonias last?
Neither begonia has a long shelf life. Most only live 2-3 years, even with good care. Cane begonias, like angel wings, go dormant if the temperature drops too low.
Do begonias grow back every year?
Most begonias are annuals (last for only one season). You can save tubers of tuberous begonias from replanting next year or bring in annual begonias as winter houseplants. Some hardy, rhizomatous begonias (B. grandis) are perennial or reappear yearly in warmer regions.
How do you keep begonias blooming?
The best way to keep begonias blooming for as long as possible is to provide partial shade and well-drained soil. Also, increase the flowering period of begonias by fertilizing your begonias every 2-3 weeks. As the blooming season progresses, old dead flowers promote the growth of new flowers.
Can begonias get too much sun?
Observe the amount of sunlight that falls on the begonias during the day. These plants thrive in partial shade, so too much sun can burn the leaves and cause them to wilt. Move plants if necessary so they get morning sun instead of the hot afternoon sun or to a spot that gets dappled sunlight all day.
How much sun can begonias tolerate?
Most begonias will do well in 4 hours of direct sun. Most begonia varieties tolerate up to 6 hours of the direct sun well. Indirect sunlight is usually adequate for begonias to grow and bloom. Morning sun and afternoon shade are the ideal combinations for begonias.
How Much Sunlight Do Begonias Require?
Sunlight Requirements But most begonias will do very well in full sun or shade. If you’re looking for ideal growing conditions, try giving the plant partial shade, with 4 to 6 hours of morning sunlight.
