The peony boasts amazing blooms, with large, scented pink, red, white, and purple blooms that begin to emerge in early spring through late summer.

You can opt for a bushy peony or a herbaceous variety when choosing it. The former, with woody stems, can reach two meters, while the latter does not exceed one meter in height.

Where do I plant it?

One of the first questions you should ask yourself: wherein the garden is convenient to plant peonies? To answer correctly, you must know that it is a plant that needs a lot of sunlight, at least 6 hours a day. However, it does not like to receive direct rays when temperatures rise, as it could burn its flowers.

The dilemma has an easy solution: think about the climate of the area where you live and act accordingly. If the temperatures are very high in summer, plant your peonies near shade trees that give them a little shelter when the heat hits. If you live in a cold and humid area, best place the peonies in full sun.

Choose the right moment.

Just as important as the location in the garden is deciding when to plant your peonies. If you want to be successful, you have to do it in early spring, when the season is still cool, as long as there are no longer frosts and the temperatures are not too low. If you live in a cold climate, it is best to wait until May.

The best irrigation pattern

Don’t let your peony go thirsty. It needs moisture to grow happily and fill with flowers, so you’ll need to establish regular and constant watering.

From spring until fall, water it twice a week. Later, it is convenient to reduce the water supply in winter: it will be weekly and more scarce.

When watering your peonies, one aspect to keep in mind is that you should not wet the leaves to avoid fungal problems.

Monitor soil drainage

Although the peony needs a good supply of humidity, it does not tolerate waterlogging of the substrate at all, so you must be vigilant so that it does not occur.

Make sure the soil is fertile and well aerated. You can add perlite or another similar material to help you conserve moisture and achieve good drainage.

A good dose of nutrients

Is it necessary to fertilize the peonies? The answer is yes, although very carefully. Too much fertilizer can be quite damaging and prevent the plant from flourishing in all its splendor.

When fertilizing, use a fertilizer for flowering plants and apply it twice a year, in spring and fall.

Prune the peony

Your peonies will benefit from training pruning if they are overgrowing. It controls its development and stimulates the growth of the plant’s lower branches, also improving flower production.

On the other hand, it is advisable to remove old branches in poor condition. Do it in the fall, when the flowering has finished.

Diseases that affect you

Although the peony is a very resistant plant, it can be affected by diseases caused by excess humidity, such as fungi. One of them is gray mold, which appears when it does not get enough sun and the leaves are frequently wet.

You can also suffer from botrytis if the humidity is very high. To avoid this, plant the peony specimens widely separated from each other in a sunny location.

Also in pot

Although the idea is to grow the peony in the garden, you can also plant it in a pot and take care of it indoors if the temperatures are warm and you have enough natural light.

Choose a herbaceous, non-shrubby species and plant it in a large pot at least 12 inches in diameter and 20 inches deep, with drainage holes at the bottom.

Place the pot in a suitable location where it can receive sunlight. If you have a window facing south or west, that will be the ideal place for your peony.

LEARN HOW TO CARE FOR AND GROW YOUR PEONIES, THE BEAUTIFUL FLOWERING PLANTS.

It is spring now, and many of the plants that have been grown during the winter season are beginning to bloom. Our protagonists today are within this group: the peony.

To start the week with enthusiasm and energy, we will teach you how to care for and grow this plant. In this new gardening post, we will explain what care peonies will require throughout the year, and for the most inexperienced, we will detail the best way to sow them.

Today you can learn where to place them, the ideal temperature, or the amount of water you should add. All these factors will determine the quality of the flowers and the general condition of the plant.

With that said, shall we get started?

Everything you need to know to grow peonies in the garden 2022

What are peonies, and what characteristics do these plants have?

Before we dive into explaining the cultivation of the peony, it does not hurt that you know the characteristics of this plant. You should know what you are up against even before deciding to plant this species in the garden or a pot.

  • Common name: Peony
  • Scientific name: Paeonia
  • Class: Magnoliopsida
  • Order: Saxifragales
  • Family: Paeoniaceae
  • Genus: Paeonia

Origin: Paeonia is the only genus in the Peoniaceae family. The plants that make it up (about 40 species approximately) are native to Asia, specifically China.

The peonies are plants that can grow shrubs or grass. For example, in the Iberian Peninsula, it is usual for them to be herbaceous. As you can deduce from this, the characteristics between one and the other vary, especially if we talk about their development.

The shrubs can reach 2 meters in height. However, the herbaceous ones grow much less (maximum 1 meter). And, if there is something common for both types, it is the leaves and the flowers.

The foliage of peonies is pinnate; its leaves are made up of follicles arranged like the whiskers of a feather. They develop alternately, are light or dark green, and do not have stipules.

But if these plants stand out for something, it is for their flowering.

As we have mentioned before, spring is when peony flowers begin to grow and do so well into summer. These are solitary, terminal and give off a pleasant aroma. They have several sepals (3-6), with ten large petals and different colors (red, white, or yellow).

And the fruits?

Peonies develop fleshy fruits with a large number of coated seeds inside. At first, they grow red, but they become darker, becoming completely black as time goes by.

What care does the peony need?

Again, we are faced with a hardy and rustic species with low maintenance. It may not seem like it, but peonies are very easy to care for and can survive inclement weather, pests, and diseases.

However, you do have to pamper them.

If you have been following us all this time, you will know that, for the correct development of a species, there are a series of cares that must be carried out and a series of conditions that must be met.

Peonies, despite being rustic species, also need good maintenance.

Its location and light

Peonies are plants that need to be located in areas that meet lighting requirements.

The planting place will not depend on your preferences. On the contrary, it will be conditioned by the region you live in. For example, it is better to place your peonies in semi-shady areas in areas where temperatures are very high.

However, if you live in temperate regions, you can put them in the sun. Ideally, they should receive several hours of sunlight a day. But, to find out, you must first know what variety of peony you have acquired. Once you figure it out, you can act on it.

Temperature

Something similar to solar lighting happens with temperature. Depending on your region, the peonies will or will not adapt to your climate. But do not worry. Although they prefer a temperate climate with mild temperatures, they tend to withstand (moderately) intense cold and heat.

The risks

You should know that peonies are not resistant to drought, so you must act accordingly. That said, watering them a couple of times a week will be more than enough.

If the temperatures are very high, increase the risks. Remember that the ground must be humid and not flooded. Also, try not to get its foliage wet.

Pay yes or no?

The answer is a resounding yes.

During the winter and autumn months, it is highly recommended to make organic contributions and fertilize minerals (soluble and diluted in water) in spring.

Soil and substrate

Humidity is a very important factor in growing peonies. They need to be in moist soils with good drainage.

Regarding the type of substrate, it is not a demanding species. It can develop in calcareous soils, poor nutrients, clay soil, etc.

Pruning

Peonies endure pruning of old and in poor condition. This operation should be carried out after flowering and in the autumn season (before the foliage falls).

Where do peonies grow best?

‘ Peonies like full sun and will bloom best in warm, bright spots. Be sure to plant the flowers away from tall trees or thick shrubs as peonies do not like to compete with other plants for sunlight, food or moisture. They must be grown in deep, fertile soil that is moisture-rich and drains well.

Why are peonies so expensive?

They are long lasting and have a fantastic shelf life within the chain from grower to end user. On top of that, they ship well. Finally, demand is always high, especially around Mother’s Day. Any one of these factors would make the price high, but peonies cover all the bases.

Are peonies sun or shade?

Herbaceous peonies prefer at least 8 hours of full sun. They will grow in partial shade, but they will not flower as readily. The only expections are some of the infrequently grown Asian woodland species, which require part shade.

Are peonies perennials?

How to plant and grow peonies, one of the most carefree of all perennials. Peonies are one of the best-known and most dearly loved perennials. … If a peony is well situated and happy, it may bloom for 100 years or more with little or no attention.
