Zinnia is a genus of plants of the sunflower tribe within the daisy family. They are native to scrub and dry grassland in an area stretching from the Southwestern United States to South America, with a centre of diversity in Mexico.

3. Start growing the zinnia flower from seed.

In places where spring warms up early, wait until the last frost has passed before directly sowing your zinnia flower seeds outside. Sow the seeds just ¼ inch deep. You will see the seedlings sprout in four to seven days. Once these seedlings are about 5 cm tall, rinse them, so they are 15 to 18 cm apart to maximize air circulation (the key to keeping zinnias looking good all season).

In colder climates, start planting indoors four to six weeks before the average date of the last frost in your area. Harden the plants by leaving the trays outside for a few hours a day before planting them in your garden.

If you buy zinnia plants at the garden centre that have already reached the flowering size, ease the transition into your garden by pruning the plants by one third. Then sit back and watch your zini park mature and bloom.

4. Avoid problems

We are ready to guarantee that zinnias will not let you down. But if you live in a place where late summer nights are cool and humid, be prepared for a possible powdery mildew encounter. Prevention is your best defence against this annoying fungus.

If you want big, bright and bold blooms, you’ll love ‘Benary’s Giant’ (Zinnia Elegans). Even in the saturated air of a Pennsylvania July, these Goliaths remain mould-free. Sometimes they get tired of standing perfectly upright when summer comes to an end. Some gardeners start this second seedling floor in June and transplant it in mid-July. The result? Clean, fresh and upright blooms from August until frost.

7. Medium magic

You’ll find plenty of mid-rise zinnias to choose from, including caramel-striped heirlooms and “cut and go” mixes. A jaw-dropping new look arrives when you think you’ve settled on a favourite. This year the novelty was “Zowie! Gold Flame”. It’s not imposing, but it doesn’t flinch either, growing to a full 12 inches tall, with a mix of red and gold. Interesting up close and striking from afar, the effect is like a French marigold mass on steroids. And not only did we like them, but butterflies preferred them over all other varieties. Many zinnia flowers have passed the rigorous testing necessary to win the All-AmericaSelections award. But the only series to win the coveted AAS Gold Medal was the hybrid Profusion series. You might think that saving seeds is a complex challenge that should be left to advanced gardeners. Not valid when it comes to zinnias. It couldn’t be easier, and when you save seeds, you not only get the colours you want (and only the ones you want), but you can also select the sources from the healthiest plants. Go ahead and, in a couple of generations of seeds, you will have developed your variety of zinnias selected to perform well under your conditions.

Right now, early fall, it’s time to give it a try. Get a few envelopes and a pencil; don’t forget the pencil because trust us, you won’t remember what’s in the envelope. Cut out a dried flower head of each colour you want to save. Disassemble the flower, remove the seeds inside, or put the entire flower in the envelope. Seal it and identify the colour. Store it in a cool, dry place until it’s time to plant next year. That’s it. You are now a seed saver!

Zinnia is one of the most colourful and beautiful species that you can grow in the garden or even indoors in a place with a lot of light. It is a plant of Mexican origin and, although it is usually grown as an annual plant, the truth is that it is a perennial plant that lasts for several seasons in frost-free climates. As I planted one in my garden a few weeks ago, today I want to tell you what a zinnia is, how to grow it and what factors affect its proper development.

Our protagonist is known by other names, depending on the place, and you may have heard her reputation as a paper flower or mystical rose. The plant is not very big; the usual thing is that it does not reach 90 cm in height or the best circumstances. The leaves are oval, deep green and quite rough. But even though it is a short plant, its pretty flowers make it a favourite of many gardeners, mainly because they have very bright colours that give joy to the garden from late summer until well into autumn.

Zinnias bloom from spring well into fall. During this period, they abound on the counters of the nurseries and draw attention for their intense tones that can be yellow, red, pink and even white. Zinnias grow and bloom best in full sun and thrive in soils of many types as long as they are well-drained. The roots rot quickly if the soil is clayey, heavy and humid. If you sow zinnia seeds, do so in rich, sandy soil when there is no longer any chance of frost. In warm regions, such as the Mediterranean, where frosts are not a problem, zinnia seeds grow as soon as night temperatures remain above 10ºC. Another option is to sow zinnia seeds indoors, where the extra protection will prevent surprises if it’s bitterly cold one night or frost falls.

If you buy the plants already developed, you will spend a little more, but you will get faster results. Position the plants, leaving enough space between them to not disturb them when they grow. It is advisable to leave about 30 cm between them.

In addition to full sun, zinnias need constant humidity to grow well. Naturally, they bloom almost non-stop, although it is advisable to remove faded flowers to make the plant look more beautiful and help form new flowers. By the end of the summer, the bushes may have grown very large and presented a somewhat awkward shape, not very aesthetic. Feel free to trim them low enough for compact, much prettier growth and a new wave of flowers the following season.

A regular dose of fertilizers favours flowering zinnias. The experts advise a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer, which we will apply every two or three weeks during the growing season, always following the instructions on the container.

15. WITH THE CUT FLOWERS, BEAUTIFUL BOUQUETS ARE FORMED

Colourful and long-lasting flower arrangements can make with zinnias. I love informal bouquets with the different varieties that exist at this time. As soon as we cut them, we must place them in a vase with clean and fresh water that we change every two or three days. A specific preservative in the water in the vase will help the flowers last longer. There are commercial products for this, but there are also some homemade recipes that you can try. Most of us know a trick. I’ll give you mine, I discovered it a long time ago, and it works well: mix one teaspoon of vinegar, one tablespoon of sugar and one crushed aspirin in 3/4 l of water.

16. POSSIBLE PESTS AND DISEASES OF ZINNIAS

Zinnias are prone to several fungal diseases, and when they do occur, there is no cure for infected plants. The excellent drainage of the soil where the plant grows is the best prevention. It is also convenient not to plant them crowded but to leave space between them so that the air can circulate freely between the branches and leaves. You should never water a zinnia by wetting the aerial part; it is best to use droppers, if possible and, if not, water so that the waterfalls directly on the base of the plant.

If you have to remove a diseased plant, don’t ever put it in the compost bin. Composting diseased plants spread disease. Diseased specimens must be discarded.

Zinnias are also not free from the attack of some insects: leaf miners, aphids, mites, or beetles are some of them. In my case, night slugs are my main enemy.
